Special Projects: Matt oversees facilities, fire prevention, EMS
Bio: Deputy Chief Matt Gustafson has worked for the District since 1998 after working for agencies in Marin County for about 15 years. Matt started with the Windsor Fire District as Battalion Chief / Fire Marshal, later filling the same role (shared services) with the Rincon Valley Fire Protection District. In 2019, just prior to the annexing and mergers of Mountain VFD, Bennett Valley FPD, Windsor FPD and Rincon Valley FPD. Matt was promoted to Deputy Chief/Support and currently oversees the fire prevention and EMS divisions. Gustafson is also assigned several projects including administration, oversite of facilities, and many other assignments. In Matts off time, he serves as an adjunct instructor with the Santa Rosa Jr. College teaching an array of fire technology courses. Matt is married to his wife Cindy and they have two adult sons.

Hometown: Matt was born and raised in Greenbrae (Marin County), has lived in Marinwood, Novato, and Petaluma. Matt moved to Windsor in 1998.
Educational Background: Matt holds a certification with the California State Fire Marshal as a Fire Officer, Master Instructor and Motion Picture/TV Entertainment Safety Officer. Matt also has an Associates Degree in Fire Science and Technology and a Batcheler’s degree in Fire Administration with minor in Fire Prevention Technology.
Career History: Matt started as a Volunteer Firefighter with the City of Larkspur in 1979 and was then hired in 1981 a Firefighter-Engineer covering sick and vacation openings on all three shifts. In 1985, Matt joined the Skywalker Ranch Fire Department (Lucasfilm) as it was being created. While working fulltime at SRFD, Matt volunteered with the Nicasio Volunteer Fire Departments as their Training Officer, and Marinwood Fire Department as a Volunteer Captain. Matt also served on the Marin County Fire Prevention Officers and Training Officers associations. Matt was promoted to Fire Captain, then to Assistant Fire Chief. In 1998, Matt then joined Windsor Fire Protection District as the agency’s first Fire Marshal and Battalion Chief. Matt had to build his skills fast as a newFire Marshal while the Town of Windsor doubled in size in a short time. Matt served on the Sonoma County Fire Prevention Officers Association serving two years as President and is the founder of the Sonoma County Operations sub-section. In 2005, Matt teamed up with Battalion Chiefs from Rincon Valley FPD forming a shared Battalion Chief service (known today as Battalion 7) which provides 24/7 Battalion Chief coverage for both Districts. He also served as Fire Marshal for both Districts. Just prior to the formation of Sonoma County Fire District, Matt was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2019 and his primary job is to assists the Fire Chief with district budgetary, planning and priorities, administrative duties, Duty Chief coverage, and projects as assigned.
